Building Design that Builds
BusinessesThe 12th annual
BusinessWeek / Architectural Record Awards showcase
smart new retail and office spaces
The new Barbie
Shanghai store is a bit far down the Huaihai Road
shopping corridor, but it's hard to miss. An eight-story
glass façade, printed with a lacy design of hearts and
flowers, glows with pink lights at night. Opened in
March, it's the first flagship shop devoted entirely to
Mattel's (MAT) iconic, 50-year-old doll. The goal:
attracting Chinese consumers to help offset a worldwide
decline in Barbie sales. In its showiness, Mattel's
temple to Barbie might seem out of sync with these
back-to-basics times. But it has a practical side that
fits right in. Indeed, Barbie Shanghai and the other
seven winners of the 12th annual
BusinessWeek/Architectural Record Awards show the value
of new architecture even in a recession.
From software maker
Autodesk (ADSK) to retailer Urban Outfitters (URBN),
companies are finding that carefully executed buildings
can help reduce operating costs, boost staff output, and
revive communities.

HBF- New products on
GSA Contract
HBF announced last week that Linea
and Chamberlain have been added to the GSA
Multiple Award Schedule for HBF. Please note that the
bookcases for both series have not been added at this time as
additional testing was required. The bookcases have
been submitted and HBF hopes to have these added to the
Schedule before the end of the year.
The Linea
Casegood Series, designed by Barcelona-based Mario Ruiz,
provides a modern and sophisticated aesthetic applicable to a
variety of office and reception environments. Rendering
a unique combination of texture and proportion, the diverse
palette of materials: wood veneer, paint, leather, glass,
stone and solid surface, provide for countless specification
options. Innovative asymmetrical overhead storage options and
LED lighting systems are balanced by subtle details, such as
recessed plinth bases and extruded aluminum shelving with wood
veneer and painted inlays. Linea's inset leather and glass
worksurfaces speak to the superior craftsmanship and timeless
design Linea uniquely offers for today's management and
executive offices.

The Chamberlain Casegood Series offers
sophisticated styling coupled with highly coveted, quality
wood working details. The design team of Lisa Bottom and John
Duvivier has incorporated functional requirements of the
modern workplace environment with transitional and traditional
private office elements to create a variety of aesthetic
options. Chamberlain casegoods, and the accompanying
conference tables, provide the appropriate balance of
craftsmanship, technological adaptability and timeless design
for today's management and executive
offices. Additionally, the veneer options of Walnut,
Rift Oak, Sapele and Anigre have been added to the
following casegoods/conference products already on schedule:

Patrician received approval from GSA to
change their two discounts of 57.1075% and 56.808% to
just one discount of 57%. The new discount applies
to everything across the board for both GSA and Open Market
items and is effective immediately. GSA has also made a
change to the SIN numbers that are eligible for a
quantity discount. Under the old
arrangement, only SIN's 711-11 and 711-16 were

Over 50 Under 50 No, this is
not an application for AARP! During a recent informal design
firm survey conducted by HBF, designers were asked, "What are
your perceptions of HBF Textiles?" The results indicated that
quite a few think HBF Textiles are higher priced then they
actually are. Another widely held perception was that
HBF Textiles only find application for private office use. The
survey also asked, "What constitutes fabrics that are used
outside of the private office, or heavy duty use and in what
price range?" The average from all the replies was a minimum
of 50,000 double rubs, with a cleanable finish for less than
$50. When you apply these standards to HBF Textiles, HBF
has quite a few patterns that are priced below $50 and even
more that are 50K and above in abrasion double rubs. Below is
a list of HBF patterns that fit the description above and can
be treated with a Nano-tex finish (click image for more
details and colorways) . Here are some points of
interest....... 1. Over a third of HBF Textiles products
are priced UNDER $50 and over half fall within a grade A, B, C
or D. 2. More than half of the HBF line performs well OVER
50,000 double rubs on the Wyzenbeek abrasion test. 3.
Nano-Tex, which offers a permanent stain resistant finish (see
last month's CSI Newsletter), can be applied to all of the
products in the Under 50/Over 50 list. For a mere $3 a yard
(over 36 yards) HBF will coordinate getting this finish
applied in typically less than 1-2 weeks. 4. HBF has
priced Nano-Tex and DuraBlock less than their competitors
because they want the customer to think of HBF Textiles as
more than just a pretty face. A great value....
