Designed
Experiences: The Evolution of Intelligent
Design
"A business absolutely devoted to
service will have only one worry about profits. They
will be embarrassingly large." That was Henry Ford,
who died in the radio age. Here in the 21st century "the
customer experience" is the holy grail. Companies hold
it up like a silver bullet from R&D. It's worth
remembering that even architects of mass production saw
the customer, not the product, as the road to success.
In our
customized world we want more than a well designed
product, we demand the whole kit and kaboodle. With hit
brands now, every user expectation is managed, every
touchpoint is controlled, every molecule is polished.
Take MINI, or the Smart ForTwo. They're as
socially-engineered as they are
machine-engineered. Established brands are an
evolution, constantly adapting. Designed brands are born
adapted. The IBM customer experience evolved; Apple's
was designed. British Airways: evolved; Virgin:
designed. The cafe culture in Milan: a random evolution;
the Starbucks empire it inspired: designed with a
caffeinated eye.

Pricing Adjustments on Selected HBF
Products
Recently, HBF announced that they
were extending significant price reductions on selected
furniture products - in some cases up to a 40% decrease in
list price. The reductions have resulted from working with
their vendors and negotiating better prices on raw material.

Talk |
Nano-Tex and
DuraBlock
At textile presentations across our
territory, we are being asked more and more about "extreme
performance upholstery". The demand for extreme
performance upholstery continues to increase significantly,
especially for demanding applications in health care
facilities, sporting arenas, airports, educational facilities,
hotels, restaurants, casinos and cruise ships. As a
result of that interest, this month's "Textile Talk" will
focus on technologies offered by HBF Textiles, Joseph Noble,
and other textile companies that create extreme performance
upholstery. Notable among the popular high-performance
upholstery finishes are those based on nanotechnology,
introduced earlier this decade. The first type of
nanotechnology to be applied successfully to interior textiles
was based on the use of nanowhiskers, which could be
permanently attached to textiles to provide enhanced, durable
resistance to spills and stains. The hooks of the
nanowhiskers are bonded to fibers, unlike topical finishes
that can be worn down, cleaned off or otherwise chemically
compromised. Textile aesthetics, such as color and hand
are not affected by this bonding process.
This technology offers protection on a nano
level which is Invisible to the eye and invisible to the
touch. Old techniques encase fabric
in thick layers of chemicals. Nano-Tex is the first high
performance nanotechnology that builds permanent spill and
stain resistance into the fiber structure of the fabric. It
bonds with the fibers, protecting the material at the atomic
level from dirt without depriving it of air.
Spills just stop, bead and roll. The performance design
of nanotechnology bonds with fabrics rather than coats them,
creating a huge new universe of fabric choices that are almost
impossible to stain. Students in the Duke TIP
Nanotechnology course tested just how stain resistant Nano-Tex
fabric really was!
What is a liquid barrier, and when is it needed?
90% of the time, Nano-Tex is the only protection you
need. Add DuraBlock when projects call for extraordinary
measures.
DuraBlock's complete liquid barrier is a
total block backing for projects that require, dare we say, a
heavier hand. Projects that involve spaces where cleaning is a
constant.
